Interview: Julian Schubach

Ellen - How did you find out about Ellen Wolff Photography / Long Island New York Headshots?

Julian - My time is quite limited due to the demand of my career and generally, I will spend just a few minutes searching for a solution to a simple need.  After a Google search and website visit, I was fortunate to book Ellen for my portraits.

E - Can you tell us why you came in for a headshot?

J - Over the past few years I have been fortunate to have been asked to participate in various speaking engagements and provide editorial content for industry publications. It is important to have a range of photographs to submit for various events.

E - How do you take your coffee?

J - French press – some variation of a dark roast – black.

E - Tell us one thing you can't live without.

J - I spend lots of time on mass transit… noise cancelling headphones.

E - What was the last book you read for fun?

J - I am re-reading the classics right now. Finished 1984 recently and now on Grapes of Wrath.

E - Tell us the best place to spend the day outdoors.

J - Long Beach's west-end beaches.

E - Red or white?

J - Red

E - What is your favorite restaurant? Why? [Any meal, any where in the world. Be sure to include the City.]

J - My favorite dish in LA is the charred octopus appetizer at Spago Beverly Hills and in NY, the black sea bass entree at Cafe Boulud.

E - What's your best trick for overcoming a block?

J - Collaborate with trusted associates or a mentor. With any project, I always have my work peer reviewed before submission to a prospective client. When I am stuck on a project, I find talking through the idea helps me overcome any block.

E - It is said that genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. What is that ratio like for you?

J - At the start of my career, this is spot on. Now, I have been fortunate to forge meaningful relationships which provide ongoing introductions, allowing me to focus more on creativity.

E - How did you get started on your current path?

J - I started as a run-of-the-mill financial advisor. I quickly realized the need to establish a focus on a specific niche. I have established wonderful relationships with business managers, entertainment attorneys, managers and artists and more than 90% of my business today is working with creatives; artists, entertainers and influencers - an industry which is under-serviced by most advisors due to the intricacy of navigating the space.

E - What is your dream project?

J - I have been fortunate to build relationships and provide advisory services to many artists I admire. I hope to continue to build relationships with many more in years to come.

E - Tell us something you want us to know about what you do, something most folks don't ask and you wish they would. (Something useful to a client or a special skill you have…)

J - I am selective with who I work with. Many financial advisors who work for a large bank or brokerage firm must meet or exceed a certain level of 'production' and often work with clients who are not a good fit. This hurts both the client and the advisor. In my case, if I am not the right fit for a prospect, I always recommend another advisor who may be a better option for their needs.

E - Where can we find out more about you?

J - I am active on social media and my blog. You can subscribe to my blog at octavewm.com/blog or follow me on Twitter and Instagram: @Julian_Schubach or LinkedIn: in/julianschubach
